Visit To Zapata Falls - Photos on July 15, 2007
My friend "Jumpin' Julie" and her family are here for the
summer and today we went on an excursion to Zapata Falls in the San Luis Valley.
After attending church in Crestone and stuffing our faces with way too much food at
a potluck dinner afterwards, we were ready to get out and go for a walk.
Many of these photos include people in them, which was a very fitting documentation of this encouraging and
meaningful time with friends. The freezing cold water that we walked through
made things quite interesting, of course. Let's just say my sense of touch were quite overloaded! -Steve :)
Zapata Falls, Colorado
Special thanks to Will, Helen, Jumpin Julie and Katie for spending the day with me. There they are at a lookout at the Zapata Falls Trailhead area. |
Immersing your feet (and in some spots, ankles) in the creek is necessary to reach the falls. The good news is, the creek has been running much less than in the Spring. Friends reported to me that wading up the creek was nearly impossible in June because of all the spring runoff above. |
A shot looking practically straight up at the rock crevasse that Zapata Falls and its creek run through. |
Special thanks to Julie and her family for giving me a gift of this cigar. I gladly smoked it up at the waterfall as seen in the terrible-looking photo of me above! :) |
Katie, Will and Helen made it up to the falls, with the water being really cold. Note all the water blotches on my camera. Yikes! |
The two best pictures of Zapata Falls include Will (left) and Katie
(right), who bravely climbed to the upper base of the waterfall. I was wearing
sandles, which was decent for navigation (although my toes and feet were freezing!) but
generally poor for using traction to climb closer to the waterfall.
This was my first visit to Zapata Falls with it fully running and no ice or snow covering it. |
On the way back down, I captured this shot of the Great Sand Dunes from the trail. It was a great adventure! |
